How to Care for Your Reusable Food Wraps

"What are reusable food wraps? How do they work? How do I wash them? Where do I store them?"
Today we are going to answer some of your most commonly asked questions about reusable food wraps, how to use them and how to care for them! Let's get learning!

"What are reusable food wraps?"
Reusable food wraps, also known as beeswax wraps, are a naturally antibacterial cover or wrap made from 100% cotton and coated in a natural wax blend. They are a reusable and eco friendly substitute for plastic cling wrap that keeps food fresher for longer.

"How do they work?"
Compared to plastic wrap and containers that suffocate food, our food wraps allow food to breathe whilst protecting it from wilting in the fridge. This keeps food fresh and crisp, as it should be!

Some of our food wrap records include:

Avocado staying fresh for TWO WEEKS!
Cucumber staying fresh for THREE WEEKS!
Celery staying fresh for FIVE WEEKS!

"How long do they last?"
Food wraps can last up to 1 year (and potentially much, much longer!) depending on use and care. Wear and tear with heavy use over prolonged periods of time can occur. Keep reading to find out how to get the most of our your wraps!!

"How do I use them?"
Reusable food wraps can be shaped and wrapped directly around your food (fruit & veggies, sandwiches, snacks) as well as kitchenware (bowls, plates, etc.).

You simply shape the wrap directly around your food items or kitchenware using the warmth of your hands to stick them down. For example if you want to cover a bowl all you need to do is place the wrap over the bowl and press the sides of wrap into the bowl and with the heat of your hands.

"How do I wash them?"
Hand wash in COOL soapy water, or wipe down with a damp cloth. It is very important that your wraps DO NOT get washed in warm or hot water. Hot liquids will damage the wax coating and has the ability to melt the wax right off!

"How do I dry them?"
Food wraps are best when they are left to air dry in your drying rack. They can also be hung or pegged up to dry. If you need to use your wrap immediately after washing you can gently wipe with a towel to dry.

"How do I remove a stubborn piece of food?"
Ideally you want to avoid scrubbing your wrap with anything abrasive. The best way to remove any stubborn bits of dried food is to soak you wrap in cool water for 5min then gently wipe it down with a soft cloth.

"Where do I store my wraps?"
Once wraps are dry, store in a dry, cool place such as a pantry or drawer.

Here are some of our favourite storage ideas:

  • Roll your wraps up and place them standing upright in a large jar or container. Then you can easy see the different sizes in the variation in height!
  • Clip your wraps to the fridge with a Magnetic Fridge Clip for easy access.
  • Hang them from a cork board inside your pantry.
  • Hang them from a small hanging peg dryer.
  • Place flat in a cupboard or drawer (you can fold if you need to, however this may cause your wraps to crease).
"Can I put them in the dishwasher or microwave?"
No you cannot wash food wraps in the dishwasher or heat in the microwave. As mentioned above, wraps cannot go in warm or hot water and must be gently hand washed. Hot temperatures can damage and melt the wax.

"What food isn't safe to wrap?"
Do not use your wrap for raw meats, hot foods or liquids. Staining may occur with brightly coloured foods like blueberries or beetroot.

"How do I revive my damaged or worn out wrap?"
When your wrap has come to the end of its life, refresh it with our DIY Wax Blend (pictured below) or alternatively compost or bury it so it returns to the earth without a trace.
